Altiplano
Up on the high planes or ‘altiplano’, the roads are flat and at times there was even a hard shoulder.
The distances between settlements and fuel stations can be long. This one was advertising 430 km (265 miles) in advance.
Although the flat landscape can be monotonous, there is a sense of being in a huge open space and travelling under a very big sky. The only landmarks are occasional fuel stations and these modern silver mills which process grain and soya.
Another common sight is the rhea, flightless birds related to the emu which feed amongst the crops beside the road. Beth liked to chase them to see how close she could get.
Dramatic skies at sunset.
