Kootenay National Park
From Lake Louise we headed South towards Radium Hot Springs through Kootenay National Park to soak our muscles in the therapeutic waters.
The Earth in this area is very yellow. It was used by the indigenous people to make a yellow dye used for body paint.
It was on this stretch that we saw a grizzly bear. These are larger than the black bears with males measuring a scary two meters from nose to tail. We thought we were safe on the other side of the river but he crossed it within a few seconds so we had to make a swift exit shielded by a car.
Relatives at home were worried about reports of forest fires in Canada while we were there. Although we didn’t pass through any sections which were burning, we did see plenty of evidence of recent fires.
