Columbia Icefield
From Jasper the road climbs higher to Athabasca Glacier fed by an enormous area of ice high in the mountains known as the Columbia Icefield.
Incredibly muscular and agile mountain goats live on the slopes of the mountains here. This one sprinted across the road in front of us and swiftly disappeared up the mountain with her baby following behind.
The glacier is formed from compacted snow in the Columbia Icefield, flowing down the mountain at a rate of several centimetres per day to the valley where it melts. You can sometimes hear creaks and groans as the ice moves.
We went up to have a closer look. Very slippery in cycling shoes. Without crampons we couldn’t go any further.
